2013 "Shou Blanc" (White Bdx Blend)- SWMREC Vineyard 750ml

The Wine: The first thing noticeable is the luminous delicate buttery color of this wine. The nose emanates dusty starfruit, green fig and honeyed-apple aromas leading into a palate that is rich and piquant.  Candied citron, turkish fig and comice pear coat the mouth with a very long finish of sweet/tart lemon peel and fruit cocktail. The wine exhibits excellent acidity and a silky body that perfectly balances the semi-dry character of this wine.  This "Moelleux" style of white Bordeaux is common to Entre-deux-Mer and Montbazillac though not well known in the United States.  It is a delicious wine and deserves more notice.

Harvested:  October 1-4, Sugar: 25.4 %, pH: 3.22, Total Acidity: .90, Alc. 14.5%, Only 20 cases produced.  Blend: 25% Sauvignon Blanc, 24% Sauvignon Blanc Musque, 20% Semillon, 17% Sauvignon Gris, and 14% Sauvignon Vert. Residual Sugar: 1.3%

Food Pairing: This wine would be perfect with dry swiss cheeses, figs and almonds, moroccan seasoned poultry,French-style apple tarts, roast pork loin, moderately spiced asian food, foie gras, and shrimp pasta.   It is also delicious all by itself, having the complexity to hold attention and provoke commentary.

The Vintage and Vineyard: In the midst of the largest Chardonnay harvest our estate vineyards have produced, we received a call offering us the crop of white Bordeaux grape varietals growing in the experimental vineyard at the Southwest Michigan Research Extension Center, (known affectionately by those of us in the business as “Swim Wreck”, or SWMREC).  Of course I was thrilled, being a lover of white Bordeaux-style wines which are usually a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon in various proportions.   But there was a bonus in that also growing there were the much more rare Sauvignon Gris and Sauvignon Vert varieties which are also permitted in white Bordeaux wines.   By the time we finished our Chardonnay harvest, the grapes had gone from very ripe to super ripe.   This made it pretty unlikely that we would be able to make the crisp dry style we had wanted.   But one has to accept what Mother Nature gives!   2013 was a marvelous vintage—good quantities and excellent quality in every variety of grapes we grow.

The SWMREC vineyard is on a sandy loam hill in Sodus, just southeast of Benton Harbor.   The proximity to Lake Michigan creates a cool sunny site perfect for the early ripening white Bordeaux varietals. The different grapes were pressed together, marrying the flavors from the start.   The settled sweet juice was then cold fermented with Epernay 2 yeast to emphasize the aromatic elements in the wine.   Once the fermentation was half completed, the wine was transferred into a neutral French oak barrel where it aged for fifteen months.   The wine fell clear and was lightly filtered and bottled with 1.3% residual sugar remaining in the wine.
