2017 Wyncroft Shou Blanc

2017 Wyncroft Shou Blanc

The Wine:

This wine is a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon. Subtle aromas of spring flowers, yellow apple, and ripe pear overlaid with a savory beeswax note make way for a palate that is smooth and plush. Tasting of white peach, tart yellow apple, and sweet lemons, completed by a long, polished and vibrant finish.  As the wine has a good amount of Semillon in the blend, it will age and improve over the next 5 years. The great white wines of Pessac-Leognan in Bordeaux, such as Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Chateau Latour-Martillac, and Chateau Carbonnieux, are the templates for this wine.  As our climate is very similar to that of Bordeaux, we aim for the perfume, body, complexity, and finesse of these great wines.  The wine was bottled on June 21st, 2018, and then bottle-aged until its release in April 2019.

ABV 13%, Total acidity .61, pH 3.20

2017 gave us a wonderful warm summer with a dry sunny fall at our LePage Estate Vineyard in Allegan County. The substantial crop on the young vines ripened perfectly, with excellent flavors and crisp acidity.  The grapes were hand harvested October 2-14, gently whole-cluster pressed into our temperature controlled tanks and fermented at 60 degrees with a blend of VL3 and 58W3 yeast to insure pure bright flavors. The Semillon was fermented separately using the same yeasts.  Once clear, half of the Semillon was aged for three months in a new Acacia wood barrel, a traditional wood that imparts silkiness to the body and a mild hint of hazelnut to the citrus and green fig flavors of Semillon.  On March first, the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon were blended together and rested for another four months in a sealed tank to allow the flavors to marry.  This wine is a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon. Bottled June 21, 2018, Released April 2019.
